Watch & Strap Types

4 types of watches you need and what straps to wear them with

Every man should own at least one suit – we know this saying and we are sure that many of you do own several. But what about watches? Is one enough to comfortably find yourself in every situation without looking inappropriately?

We thought about it long and hard and came up with 4 types of watches that you probably should have in your collection to be confident about going into almost all situations in life and feel great about what you wear on your wrist.

Chronograph

The excitement and beauty of a chronograph come from the complexity of the watch face and the mechanism itself. Multiple sub-dials and precision work required to bring this type of watch to the forefront of the watches you should own. But there’s another reason these watches are so beloved among watch collectors and wearers – versatility.

Here’s where the power of the watch strap shows – depending on what do you attach to this watch face you can change its look and function completely! Starting with rubber sports bands that will make it super casual, through steel bracelets that will make it tough and masculine and even make it look like a luxury product by choosing a chronograph made out of platinum or gold and adding a high-quality leather strap to it.

Pilot Watches

Pilot watches as you can imagine come from the long tradition of supplying the aviation industry and military pilots. The watch face of a pilot watch is easy to recognize thanks to large markings and easy to grab and operate crown. This was the design that made them practical and easy to use in high-paced dangerous situations while in the cockpit of a plane. This tradition goes back to the WWI and WWII and this type of watch is still very popular. So popular in fact that there are watchmakers who specialize mainly in pilot watches (like Breitling and IWC).

When it comes to pilot watch we see two main types of straps that go with them. The old-school design should be worn with leather straps that are a nod to the original models produced for Royal Air Force in the 1930s. There are however modern, more high-tech designs that can be paired with stainless steel or even gold bracelets in the top of the line luxury designs.

Dress Watch

This is the one that is quite hard to replace as it is the specific type you pair with suit and tie or a jacket in more formal situations. That requires a certain level of sophistication and class and sometimes men can’t quite get there when choosing what watch to wear in those situations (don’t worry – even James Bond made mistakes in that department!).

The key is understated watch face with a minimal number of features. The dress watch must be quiet and as simple as possible. The watch face can be rectangular or round. When it comes to watch straps when you’re not sure you should always go for black or brown leather (or vegan leather) watch strap with no pattern.  You can’t go wrong wearing a classic!

Apple Watch

We need to recognize the rise of the smartwatch when talking about the set of watches worth owning. And as the market grows the clear leader by any metric is Apple Watch. The advanced smartwatch features focused more and more on the fitness measurements and logging your overall health is a versatile and interesting choice for casual everyday situations. But we can also see it on the wrists of celebrities during talk shows etc. Even though we don’t recommend it you can classy up the Apple Watch with a proper watch face selection and an amazing array of straps and bands available for the device ranging from Nike’s sports straps to bracelets and mesh bands made out of the precious metals worth tens of thousands of dollars.

Hope you enjoyed our list and that it will help you choose the right straps for the watches you already have as well as choosing new watch faces in the future!
