NATO watch straps you will love

NATO watch straps are everywhere these days – from fashion focused exclusive collections to affordable straps you can find online and everything in between. That’s why today we present the history and the appeal of NATO, ZULU and Perlon watch straps.

Short history of NATO watch straps

The name of the NATO straps can be a little misleading as it wasn’t exclusive in any way to NATO troops and should be called G10 instead as this was the name of the form a soldier needed to fill to get the straps from the unit’s supply store also called G10. The straps had an additional long strap that went under the watch face, and brass buckle and keepers. It was made out of nylon and was a very popular standard issued item in the army. It debuted in 1973 in the British Ministry of Defense Standard.

The design of the additional strap going under the watch face and nylon as the material had a practical reasoning behind it. Thanks to these choices there was a very low risk of the strap breaking and in the case of spring bar breaking the watch will still stay on your hand and you won’t lose it. This design will also prevent the watch from moving on your wrist. All of these were important for soldiers but still make it a very robust choice for everyone today.

NATO watch straps in every color of the rainbow

The straps were only available in “Admiralty Grey” and 20mm width and evolve later to 18mm width. The troops started honoring their unit’s colors by changing the colors on their watch straps. Today NATO straps are available in all the colors of the rainbow both in solid colors and multicolor versions with visible stripes in different colors. The multi-color designs are very versatile and can complement many different looks.
The fun and accessibility of NATO make them a great addition to your strap’s collection and will allow you to make your overall style a little more fun and unpredictable.

What are ZULU and Perlon watch straps?

Perlon straps are constructed with tightly woven nylon that has an unlimited adjustability as they don’t have predetermined holes for the buckle pin as the pin goes easily through the strap’s material.

ZULU straps have two versions – 3-ring and 5-ring with the first one has no additional long strap that goes underneath the watch face and the second being similar to NATO straps but with thicker nylon used and bigger buckle.
