For many people, it is very hard to understand what a horrible faith it is for some to have small wrists. It’s even harder when you are a watch collector and lover as you have often fewer choices with both short watch straps and watches that look good on your wrist.

So today we would like to talk a little about what exactly “small wrist” means how to choose good watch straps and what watch faces will suit best a smaller hand. This way you’ll be able to choose wisely and always look good!

What wrist is a small wrist?

We’ve looked all over the internet and asked around what wrist is a small wrist statistically and finally, we’ve come across a study conducted on US Army soldiers that, among many other things, compared men and women wrist sizes answering the question in a great detail.

There were over 4000 participants that were chosen carefully for statistical significance of the sample (gender, sex, race etc.) so it looks like a credible source of knowledge. And as you know here at strapsy.eu we take wrists sizes very very seriously! 😉

Average size women wrist is 15,1 cm and for men, this number is 17,4 cm. Everything below that is a smaller size wrist although it is a bit different from what the watch straps standards are (more about that below). What is interesting about this study was that the average difference in wrist size between men and women is just 2,3 cm!

Short watch straps specification

So, you’ve just found out you have small wrists but still want to show your style by wearing a watch with many different gorgeous short watch straps that complete your look, are fun or makes you look more professional. To achieve that you need to know exactly what are the characteristics of short watch straps to get the right one every time!

Most popular extra short watch straps come in sizes: 105/65 mm for wrist size of up to 155 mm wrist and 100/60 mm for 145 mm wrist. Extra short watch straps are usually looked after by people with wrists below 155mm, usually, wrists above that size should fit the regular size straps.

The length of both parts of the strap is measured, named the tip part (with holes) and the element part (with buckle/clasp attached – but please do note that the buckle/clasp is not included in the length of the strap) with the tip part always being the longer one. When measuring your wrist total length needed is a sum of the length of the watch head (usually 25 – 40mm) and watch strap.

Perfect watch faces for small wrists

The situation is a little easier in this case for women as there are more designs that look good on a small wrist for women.

If you are women with smaller wrists what you basically need to look for are small and rather simple watch faces with a small crown and no additional elements so overall the watch looks proportional and doesn’t overpower the wrist.

With men watches situation is different not only because there’s always less choice for people with non-typical sizes but even more because of the trend that favorites bigger, bolder watch faces. This is exactly what you need to avoid when you choose a watch and you have small wrists.

To always choose the right watch you need to implement four simple rules that will inform your buying decisions:

1. No embellishments on the watch
2. Watch face size below 40 mm
3. No thick or bulky designs
4. Short and proportionate watch straps
